A crater walk stays on Etna's flanks, between about 1,800 and 2,500 m, among side craters and old lava flows, often with a lava cave and with no cable car to pay. It suits families and anyone who wants a few hours on foot without the summit's altitude; 69 tours sell it, at a median of €75 (October 2026).
It's for you if you want a real walk on lava and through craters without the summit's altitude.
Think twice if you want to stand at the summit craters.

Among Etna tours of this kind priced per person, comparing tours alike in everything else (a regression on October 2026 prices).
A long walk to the Valle del Bove rim, an easy one with a tasting, and the north side's 2002 craters. GetYourGuide prices, October 2026.
| Tour | Price | Length | Getting there | Rating | Why pick it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Catania: Mount Etna Trekking Tour Beyond the Usual Paths | €69 per person | 7 hours | Meeting point | ★ 4.9 (1,830) | Highest-rated big seller: Silvestri craters to the Valle del Bove rim, and a lava cave. |
| From Catania: Etna Volcano Crater Hike & Sicilian Tasting | €59 per person | 5.5 hours | Hotel pickup | ★ 5.0 (345) | Easy 1.5-hour walk to 2,000 m at the Silvestri craters, then a farm tasting. |
| Mount Etna: Craters of the 2002 Eruption Trekking Experience | €36 per person | 3 hours | Meeting point | ★ 4.8 (242) | North side: the 2002 eruption craters from Piano Provenzana in about 3 hours. |
The lower mountain is where Etna’s flank eruptions left their marks, and these walks go from one to the next. About half of the 69 leave Catania in the morning by minibus, and several stop for coffee in a village on the way up. Etnaround's trek stops in Trecastagni so the group can buy a sandwich for lunch, and Etna Guide Tours' hike does the same in another village on the slope.
On the south side the walking starts near Rifugio Sapienza, at about 1,850 to 1,970 m, beside the Silvestri craters. INGV dates them to the flank eruption of July to December 1892, which opened its vents between about 1,800 and 2,025 m. Entry to the craters costs €5 (Funivia dell’Etna’s page, October 2026). From there the longer walks climb. Etnaround goes up about 550 m to 2,400 m, past the lava flow of 2001, and stops for lunch on the edge of the Valle del Bove, the huge basin below the summit craters. Kemedia’s Valle del Bove viewpoint hike reaches a belvedere at around 2,500 m. Shorter tours, like ETNA VIBES' Silvestri walk, stay near 2,000 m for an hour and a half.
The ground is cinder and old lava, firm in places and loose on the slopes, and many routes come down a steep run of soft volcanic sand. It is cooler and windier than the coast, so the listings ask for a windbreaker and closed shoes even in summer.
Nearly half of the 69 tours add a lava tube, a tunnel left when the surface of a lava flow cooled and the molten rock inside drained away. You go in with a helmet and a head lamp, which Kemedia’s sunset trek with a cave hands out. Lemontour visits the Grotta dei Tre Livelli; Etna Guide Tours walks through the Grotta Pitagora on the way down. Etnaround warns that when tremors run high or an eruption has just ended, the cave is skipped.
On the north side the story is the eruption of October 2002. INGV dates its start to the night of 26 to 27 October, when a fissure opened on the north-east flank in an eruption that destroyed the tourist station at Piano Provenzana. Guide Vulcanologiche Etna Nord’s 2002 craters trek starts from the Piano Provenzana car park, about 1,800 m, passes the ruins of the Hotel Le Betulle and climbs the cinder cones the eruption left, in about three hours. It needs four people to run, and from December to March the guides rent snowshoes on site for €12.
Most of these walks cost nothing extra on the day: only a handful of the 69 listings add a cable car or 4x4 fee. They also run when the summit treks are turned back, because they stay below the summit zone that the town ordinances close first. The exception is a fresh vent or lava flow nearby: Belpasso’s ordinance 135 of 10 August 2026 draws a safety band around active lava at any altitude.
How hard, how far, who can come, and what the lava caves are like, from the tour listings (October 2026).
Yes: they sit beside the road below Rifugio Sapienza and need no guide. Entry costs €5, free for Sicily residents and children of 10 and under with a paying adult, open 8:30 to 17:00 (Funivia dell'Etna's page, October 2026); the visit takes about half an hour. A guide adds the longer walks to the Valle del Bove and the lava caves.
Easy to moderate on most tours, which stay between about 1,800 and 2,500 m and walk two to four hours. The ground is cinder and old lava, loose on the slopes, so closed shoes with grip matter. The longer south-side walks climb about 550 m to the Valle del Bove rim; ETNA VIBES' Silvestri walk stays near 2,000 m.
Cooled lava, on every one of these walks; flowing lava only during an eruption, and no tour can promise it. The walks cross the flows of 1892, 2001 and 2002 and go inside lava tubes. When lava is flowing, the town ordinances keep everyone at a distance from it, and guides decide on the day what can be seen. Sunset tours
Many are, from about 6 to 10 years depending on the operator. Guide Vulcanologiche Etna Nord's 2002 craters trek takes children from 6; Etnaround's longer trek from 10. The list also has a family trek to the 2002 craters and a cave, and a private family-friendly half day.
A short walk into a tunnel of cooled lava, with a helmet and a head lamp the guide provides. Nearly half of the 69 crater tours include one, such as the Grotta dei Tre Livelli or the Grotta Pitagora. Etnaround skips its cave when tremors run high or an eruption has just ended.
Usually yes, because they stay below the summit zone that the ordinances close first. At ALLARME everything above 2,500 m closes, and Belpasso's ordinance 135 of 10 August 2026 also keeps people away from active lava at any altitude, so a new vent nearby can still stop a walk. Summit hikes and their closures
From December to March often yes, and the north-side guides rent them on site. Guide Vulcanologiche Etna Nord charges €12 a pair and Gruppo Guide Etna Nord €15 (listings, October 2026); Sicilying's winter trek from Rifugio Sapienza includes them. Bring your own gloves and hat: Guide Vulcanologiche Etna Nord says it does not lend them.
