Mount Etna day trips: the craters from a seat, often with a second stop

A day trip drives you round the mountain: most often up to the old side craters at about 2,000 metres, sometimes to wineries on its lower slopes, with short walks between the stops. It suits families, older travellers and anyone who wants Etna without a hike. Of the 121 tours here, 77 add a second stop such as the Alcantara Gorges or Taormina, and 47 a winery or a wine tasting.

It's for you if you want the craters, a lava cave and the views from a seat, picked up at your hotel, often with the Alcantara Gorges or Taormina the same day.

Think twice if you want a real hike or the summit: the walks are short and stay near 2,000 m.

The road up, the walks in between, and the second stop

These 121 tours are driven days: a van, minibus, coach or, on a few, a vintage car or a train takes you round and brings you back, and the walking happens between the stops. On the south side the road climbs through Nicolosi to Rifugio Sapienza, the base at about 1,900 m, stopping on the way at the rim of the Valle del Bove and at a lava cave. At the top comes a walk round the Silvestri Craters, left by the 1892 eruption (€5 entry by the road, October 2026), and free time among the bars and souvenir shops. Tourist Service’s From Catania: Panoramic Bus to Etna, Free Time & Audio Guide is the bare version: a panoramic bus from Catania, an audio guide and three and a half hours at the refuge.

Most of the walking is short. On 91 of the 121 listings it is a stroll at most: 15 minutes to an hour between 1,700 and 2,100 m, on cinder paths that operators rate easy to moderate. The rest add a guided walk of a few hours, and the listing says so. 34 of the days go into a lava cave, which is short too: helmet on, torch in hand, 15 to 30 minutes inside. Dream Island’s north-side cave, the Grotta dei Ladroni, has 1776 carved over its entrance; villagers once stored snow there to sell in summer.

Few of these days go above 2,500 m. 13 of them do, by the cable car from Rifugio Sapienza or the 4x4 bus on either side. On the others you can add the lifts on the day: Funivia dell’Etna charges €54 for the cable car alone and €82 with its 4x4 bus and a guide (October 2026). When the authorities raise the alert, the operator may allow only the cable car ride to 2,500 m. If you want to climb, see the summit hikes; if you want the off-road tracks, see the 4x4 jeep tours.

Etna and a second stop

Most of these days pair the mountain with something else. Dream Island’s Sicily: Etna and Alcantara Gorges Full-Day Tour with Lunch walks a 3 km trail from 1,665 to 1,775 m to the Sartorius Craters, visits the cave, stops for lunch and spends an hour at the Alcantara Gorges, with the entry ticket included; bring swimwear if you want the cold river. Kemedia’s From Catania: Full-Day Mount Etna and Taormina Tour gives Taormina an hour and a half of free time after the mountain. On Reddit, travellers rate Etna plus Alcantara as a pairing that works; Taormina by day gets mixed reports, kinder in the evening. The 47 days built round a winery or a tasting, some of them half days from Taormina with three cellars and no crater walk, are also on the wine page.

Dress for wind at 2,000 m whatever the month, and wear closed shoes: several operators refuse sandals on the lava.
