A summit hike is two to four hours on foot over loose volcanic ground, from the end of the 4x4 track at about 2,800 m to the crater rim at 3,300 to 3,400 m, with a licensed guide. It suits anyone fit for a long hill day; 50 tours sell it on GetYourGuide, at a median of €65 before the fees paid on the mountain (October 2026).
It's for you if you want to stand at the summit craters and can walk 4 to 5 hours at altitude, with a guide.
Think twice if you should not exert yourself at 3,000 m, are travelling with children under about 10, or the forecast is thick cloud.

Among Etna tours of this kind priced per person, comparing tours alike in everything else (a regression on October 2026 prices).
A lower listed price here means more to pay on the mountain, not a cheaper day.
The bestseller, the cheapest with gear lent, and the north side. GetYourGuide prices, October 2026, before the fees paid on site.
| Tour | Price | Length | Getting there | Rating | Why pick it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Etna: Guided Summit Hiking Tour up to 3400m, Optional Pickup | €55 per person | 5 - 9 hours | Hotel pickup | ★ 4.7 (6,159) | The bestseller, over 6,000 reviews; choose the 3,000 m or the 3,400 m option. |
| From Catania: Summit Trek with a volcano Guide and Gear | €35 per person | 4 - 8 hours | Hotel pickup | ★ 4.7 (286) | From €35 with boots and helmet lent; the cable car fare is paid on top. |
| Mount Etna: Summit Trekking Tour on the Wild North Side | €55 per person | 5 hours | Meet on the mountain | ★ 4.9 (621) | North side from Piano Provenzana: a 4x4 to 2,900 m, then the quieter slope. |
Most summit hikes begin on the mountain, not in town. On the south side the group meets at Rifugio Sapienza, 1,923 m, where the Funivia dell’Etna cable car starts. On the north side it meets at Piano Provenzana, about 1,800 m, where only 4x4 vehicles go up. Tours with a Catania pickup leave around 7:30 and drive an hour to get there.
Before anything moves, the guide hands out kit. Sicilying's summit hike lends a helmet and hiking gear while stocks last; Ashàra's 3,350 m trek lists boots, poles and a rock helmet. Then the machines do the first 900 metres: the cable car to 2,500 m, 15 to 30 minutes in the listings, and on most routes a 4x4 to about 2,800 m, where the track ends.
The walk starts there. Sicilying’s 3,400 m option climbs for about two hours across recent lava flows and volcanic sand to the rim between La Voragine and Bocca Nuova, then turns toward the South-East Crater. The 3,000 m options stop lower, at the Barbagallo craters or Torre del Filosofo, with the summit craters above you rather than under your boots. The ground is loose cinder and ash, steady effort rather than scrambling. Most listings come down a different way, a long run through soft volcanic sand to a viewpoint over the Valle del Bove, then the cable car. On the north side, Guide Vulcanologiche Etna Nord’s hike for advanced hikers walks 5 km up and 7 km down, and warns that its 1,500 m of descent is harder on the knees than the climb.
The operators ask for warm layers, a windbreaker, sunglasses, water and a packed lunch; Guide Vulcanologiche Etna Nord adds gloves and a hat in spring and autumn. There is no food at the top.
The price on GetYourGuide is usually the guide only. Sicilying collects €54 on site for the cable car (3,000 m option) or €82 for the cable car and 4x4 (3,400 m). Ashàra and Aitne Med take €65 in cash for both. On the north side etnahikers asks €60 for its Unimog, and Guide Vulcanologiche Etna Nord €50 for the 4x4 up, €20 more to ride back down, and €5 to €8 for parking. On a €55 tour that makes €109 to €137 all-in (listing prices, October 2026). Two listings include everything: Visit Etna sud's cable car ticket with a guide and Lemontour’s trek with cable car and 4x4.
The summit craters lie in the permanent-hazard zone (ZPP) that the town ordinances draw around them. Under Belpasso’s ordinance 135 of 10 August 2026, licensed alpine or volcanological guides may take at most ten hikers each into it while INGV’s alert phase is the normal one, ATTENZIONE. At PREALLARME the zone closes to everyone, guides included. Each listing says what happens then. Ashàra and Aitne Med switch to the cable car only and charge €54 instead of €65; Sicilying follows another route at the highest altitude the rules allow. Some north-side treks also need eight people and are cancelled when they do not fill.
Effort, altitude, the guide rule and the fees on the day, answered from the tour listings and the town ordinances (October 2026).
On a guided summit tour, two to four hours of walking in a day of about five hours from the meeting point. The cable car and a 4x4 carry you from 1,923 m to about 2,800 m first; Sicilying's 3,400 m option then climbs for about two hours and comes down on sand. With a Catania pickup, add about an hour's drive each way.
Moderate for someone who walks regularly, hard for anyone unfit or with weak knees. The trail is loose cinder and sand between 2,800 and 3,400 m, and about a third of the listings rate the walk as demanding. Guide Vulcanologiche Etna Nord's north route drops 1,500 m on the way down and calls the descent harder than the climb. The listings rule out pregnant women and people with heart or breathing problems.
Not to the summit craters: they sit in a permanent-hazard zone that only licensed alpine or volcanological guides may lead groups into. On the south side the rule is Belpasso's ordinance 135 of 10 August 2026, with at most ten hikers per guide. Nicolosi's ordinance 27 of 13 November 2023 lets you walk on your own elsewhere in the high zone, dawn to dusk, while the alert phase is normal. Crater walks that need no summit
INGV's alert phase and the town ordinances decide what is open, and the guide applies them on the morning of the tour. At PREALLARME the summit zone closes to everyone; at ALLARME everything above 2,500 m closes. Before the day, read the communiqués of INGV's Osservatorio Etneo (ct.ingv.it) and the ordinance list on parcoetna.it; the summit listings reserve the right to change or cut the route.
€109 to €137 a head on the bestselling hike, because its €55 price leaves the cable car and 4x4 to be paid on the day. Sicilying collects €54 for the 3,000 m option or €82 for 3,400 m; Ashàra and Aitne Med take €65 in cash on top of their own price (listings, October 2026). What each cable car ticket buys
The south side has the cable car and most departures; the north side is reached by 4x4 only and is quieter. South-side treks meet at Rifugio Sapienza above Nicolosi, north-side ones at Piano Provenzana above Linguaglossa, where parking costs €5 on weekdays and €8 on Sundays (Guide Vulcanologiche Etna Nord's listing, October 2026). About a quarter of the hikes start on the north side. Tours from Taormina
The tour goes lower, and most charge less on site. Ashàra and Aitne Med switch to the cable car only (€54 instead of €65); Sicilying follows another route at the highest altitude the rules allow; ETNA BLAZE refunds in full if it cancels. GetYourGuide bookings on these tours can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before. Days that need no summit
