Mount Etna jeep tours: craters and caves from a seat

A jeep or van tour drives you to the old side craters at about 2,000 metres, walks you short stretches between stops and usually ducks into a lava cave. It suits families, older travellers and anyone who wants Etna without a hike, and more than a third of the 149 tours add the Alcantara Gorges or Taormina to the day.

It's for you if you want the craters, a lava cave and the views from a seat, picked up at your hotel.

Think twice if you want the summit: the vehicles stop at about 1,900 to 2,000 m.

Tarmac, dirt tracks and the walks in between

Most of these 149 tours are a van day; about one in five is a true 4x4 day, and the difference shows on the ground. The van tours climb the paved road through Nicolosi to Rifugio Sapienza, the south side’s base at about 1,900 m, stopping on the way at the rim of the Valle del Bove and at a lava cave. At the top comes a walk round the Silvestri Craters, left by the 1892 eruption (€5 entry by the road, per the cable car operator, October 2026), and free time among the bars and souvenir shops. Tourist Service’s From Catania: Panoramic Bus to Etna, Free Time & Audio Guide is the bare version: a panoramic bus from Catania, an audio guide and three and a half hours at the refuge.

The 4x4 tours leave the tarmac. On the north side, licensed jeeps take dirt tracks through pine and birch to clusters of side craters and to the lava of 2002: on 27 October that year a fissure opened on the north-east flank, and its flows destroyed the tourist buildings at Piano Provenzana and part of the Linguaglossa pine forest. Etna tour excursion’s Mount Etna: Jeep excursion and trekking suitable for everyone. Free shoes and jacket walks about 50 minutes to the side craters, drives 2 km off-road to the 2002 flows and ends in a cave, lending shoes, a jacket, a hat and gloves. On the south side, Etna Passion’s ETNA: Guided Excursion by Jeep to Europe's Largest Volcano drives to the Silvestri Craters with a short walk at each stop.

Nobody walks far. The walks run from 15 minutes to about an hour and a half, between 1,700 and 2,100 m, on cinder paths that operators rate easy. The caves are short too: helmet on, torch in hand, 15 to 30 minutes inside. Dream Island’s north-side cave, the Grotta dei Ladroni, has 1776 carved over its entrance; villagers once stored snow there to sell in summer.

None of these tours reaches the summit. The highest you can go from a seat is the cable car from Rifugio Sapienza to 2,500 m and the operator’s 4x4 bus beyond it, paid on the day: €54 for the cable car alone, €82 with the bus and a guide (operator’s prices, October 2026). Only about one tour in ten here mentions it as an extra. When the authorities raise the alert, the operator may allow only the cable car ride to 2,500 m.

Etna and a second stop

Half the list are full days. About one in seven adds the Alcantara Gorges and about a quarter add Taormina; a few do both. Dream Island’s Sicily: Etna and Alcantara Gorges Full-Day Tour with Lunch walks a 3 km trail from 1,665 to 1,775 m to the Sartorius Craters, visits the cave, stops for lunch and spends an hour at the gorges, with the entry ticket included; bring swimwear if you want the cold river. Kemedia’s From Catania: Full-Day Mount Etna and Taormina Tour gives Taormina an hour and a half of free time after the mountain. On Reddit, travellers rate Etna plus Alcantara as a pairing that works; Taormina by day gets mixed reports, kinder in the evening.

Dress for wind at 2,000 m whatever the month, and wear closed shoes: several operators refuse sandals on the lava.
