Mount Etna private tours, priced and compared

A private Etna tour is the same mountain with only your party in the car: you set the pickup time, how long you stay at the craters and whether lunch is at a winery. GetYourGuide lists 44 of them, about half priced per group and half per person, at a median of €223 a head (October 2026).

It's for you if you want the day at your pace, with your own guide and car, and are happy to pay for it.

Think twice if you travel alone on a budget: private tours are priced per group or at two to three times a seat.

Your car, your pace: how a private Etna day runs

A private day starts at your door. The driver-guide collects you from the hotel, or the cruise port on some listings, and on Prestelli's Etna and winery day the pickup is “at a time to suit you”. From Taormina or Giardini Naxos the drive to the south side takes about 75 minutes each way in the listings; from Catania it is closer to an hour. Most private tours go up in an air-conditioned car or minivan, a few in a 4x4 that leaves the asphalt for the dirt tracks.

The high point of most private days is the plateau around Rifugio Sapienza, about 1,900 to 2,000 m. That is where the Silvestri craters are, the extinct cones you can walk round in half an hour, and where the guide-drivers stop for photographs of old lava flows and buried houses. Sicily Legend's private 4x4 tour adds a lava cave with helmet and head torch and a view over the Valle del Bove, then leaves you free time at the refuge. Going higher costs extra. That tour lists the cable car as “payable on the spot”; at the counter the Funivia dell’Etna charges €54 to 2,500 m, or €82 for the cable car, 4x4 bus and an alpine guide to about 2,800 m (operator’s prices, October 2026).

What the private format cannot buy is a private walk to the summit craters on any terms you like. The craters sit inside a zone the town ordinances reserve for licensed alpine or volcanological guides, at most 10 hikers each, and the zone closes to everyone when the alert phase rises (Belpasso ordinance 135 of 10 August 2026). None of the 44 private listings is a summit trek. The way to get one is the private option on a shared summit listing: Sicilying's summit hike sells “private or small groups”.

The other half of the private list is wine. On Prestelli's three-winery day the car runs 50 minutes to the first cellar, then 30 minutes between each; the three stops pour ten wines between them with bread, cheese, cured meats and a pasta course, all in the price. Read the inclusions on the cheaper wine listings, because some charge the tasting on the day: the Gambino winery transfer includes the car and the cellar visit, and the food and wine are chosen and paid on site.

Per group or per person

A per-group price covers a set number of people, stated on the tour page as “per group up to” a number. The quad tours count a quad for two; Etna Unlimited's lava tube tour is €525 for up to two; the Mr. Tour Sicily Etna and Taormina day is priced for up to seven. Divide before you compare. Seven people on that private day pay about €114 each, against €95 a seat on Kemedia's shared Etna and Taormina day: for a family of six or seven, private costs close to a shared coach. For two, a per-person private day such as Prestelli’s at €262 a head runs two to three times a seat on a shared winery tour.

Weather is the one thing a private car does not fix. Guides on the mountain change or shorten routes for wind, snow, gas or volcanic activity, whoever is in the car. Nearly every private listing here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead; the helicopter flight wants three days.
