26 tours · typically €70 per person · prices read October 2026
A sunset tour spends the afternoon on the volcano, catches the last light at about 2,000 metres and brings you down after dark. It suits anyone free after lunch who wants the craters and a lava cave without the midday heat, and about half of the 26 tours here go into a cave.
It's for you if you want the light going down over the craters and the sea, and you are free in the late afternoon.
Think twice if you need your evening: most leave after lunch and return after dark.

Among Etna tours of this kind priced per person, comparing tours alike in everything else (a regression on October 2026 prices).
The bestseller, the cheapest one with a long record, and the one that goes highest.
| Tour | Price | Length | Getting there | Rating | Why pick it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Catania: Mount Etna Morning/Sunset Tour (Pickup & Tasting) | €59 per person | 6 hours | Hotel pickup | ★ 4.8 (4,437) | The bestseller: pickup, a lava cave, and a morning or a sunset slot. |
| Etna Sunset Tour: Volcano trek, Cave & tasting from Catania | €40 per person | 5 hours | Hotel pickup | ★ 4.8 (1,818) | The cheapest with a long record: farm tasting, a cave, groups of up to 8. |
| From Taormina: Tour of Mount Etna Upper Craters at Sunset | €120 per person | 8 hours | Meeting point | ★ 4.5 (150) | The high one: jeeps to 2,800 m with alpine guides, from Taormina. |
A sunset tour on Etna is planned backwards from one fixed moment, so the pickup moves with the calendar. Amilcare Lorenzi's sunset tour says its start “might vary depending on the sunset time”, and Etnaround warns that departures come earlier in some months. In Catania the sun sets at about 20:24 in late June, about 18:10 just before the clocks go back on 25 October 2026, about 17:05 for the rest of October, and as early as 16:43 in early December. A five-hour summer tour gets you back to town close to ten at night; a December one leaves around lunchtime.
The drive up takes an hour from Catania, closer to an hour and a half from Taormina. Most tours stop on the way: honey, olive oil or a glass of local wine at a farm in Zafferana Etnea, then a lava cave with a helmet and a torch. About half of the 26 go underground. The walk comes next, among the old side craters near Rifugio Sapienza or the Silvestri Craters, at about 1,900 to 2,100 m. Operators grade it easy: cinder paths, no climbing gear, an hour or so on foot.
For the last half hour the guide picks a viewpoint. Four listings name Piano Vetore on the south-west road; others use the Silvestri Craters or the rim of the Valle del Bove. Some pour a drink there: Etnaround’s Catania: Mount Etna Sunset Tour with Wine Tasting brings a glass of Etna wine and light food and lends a windproof jacket. Then it is the van back, in the dark.
Dress for the top, not for town. You leave Catania in shirt sleeves and stand at about 2,000 m after sundown. The listings ask for a windbreaker, closed shoes and long trousers, and Etna Est adds gloves. Etna & Sea Excursions turns away flip-flops and sandals. Kemedia lends trekking shoes if you ask the day before.
No listing promises a clear sky. Red Etna runs its tour “rain or shine”, and Exclusive Etna Excursion lets the guide change the route in bad weather. A grey evening is still a cave and a crater walk, just without the colour.
A few trips watch the sun go down above 2,500 m. SAT Group’s From Taormina: Tour of Mount Etna Upper Craters at Sunset takes a coach from Taormina to about 1,800 m, then jeeps to 2,800 m with alpine guides; dinner is extra. On the north side, Travelovers’ Etna Nord: Exclusive sunset tour with official provider drives off-road buses from Piano Provenzana to the observatory at Pizzi Deneri and walks 15 minutes to 3,000 m. The cable car company sells its own summer “Sunsetna” by 4x4 bus at €82, starting 17:30; it was not on sale when checked on 11 October 2026.
These high trips sit in the summit zone, so the alert phase decides. Under Belpasso ordinance 135 of 10 August 2026, the pre-alarm phase closes the permanent-hazard zone around the craters to everyone, guides included, and the alarm phase closes everything above 2,500 m. The 2,000 m sunset tours sit below that line; Red Etna writes that its tour “is not affected by any prohibitions or restrictions”.
Timing, cold, cloud and how high you get, answered first.
About four hours before sunset, so the start moves through the year. In Catania the sun sets near 20:24 in late June, near 18:10 just before the clocks go back on 25 October 2026, about 17:05 in the last week of October and around 16:43 in early December. Operators confirm the exact pickup after booking; Amilcare Lorenzi's listing says its start varies with the sunset time.
From €40 to €200 a person on GetYourGuide in October 2026, with €70 the median price. The cheap end covers the van, the guide, a cave and a tasting; dinner is excluded on most, and SAT Group's Taormina trip leaves dinner and jacket hire to pay on the spot. None of the 2,000 m sunset tours needs the cable car.
Cold enough that every listing asks for a windbreaker, even in summer. You finish at about 2,000 m after dark, far above the warm coast. Bring a warm layer, long trousers and closed shoes; Etna Est also asks for gloves, and Etnaround lends a windproof jacket.
The tour usually goes ahead, and nobody guarantees the sunset. Red Etna runs rain or shine, and other operators let the guide change the route in bad weather. Read the listing's cancellation line before you book if the light is the only reason you are going.
Only when the volcano is erupting, and no tour can promise it. The standard sunset tours walk old craters and lava flows at about 2,000 m. During the August-September 2026 eruption the cable car company ran a special sunset eruption trip; such trips appear and stop with the activity.
Not on foot at the summit, but a few trips go above 2,500 m by vehicle. SAT Group drives jeeps to 2,800 m from Taormina, and Travelovers takes off-road buses to Pizzi Deneri at 3,000 m on the north side. Both depend on the alert phase: under Belpasso ordinance 135 of 10 August 2026, the alarm phase closes everything above 2,500 m. Summit hikes run by day.
The ground is the same; the sunset tour trades midday heat for cold and a late return. Etna Est's bestseller and Etna periperi sell both slots on one listing. In July and August the evening slot avoids the hottest hours; in winter it starts around lunchtime and ends in the dark.
