Mount Etna tours from Catania

Catania sits at the foot of the volcano, and a tour van reaches the south side's base station at Rifugio Sapienza in about an hour. Two thirds of Etna's reviews on GetYourGuide come from the 214 tours that start here, from summit treks to sunset drives, at a median of €80 a head (October 2026).

It's for you if you stay in Catania or fly into it; the volcano is an hour up the road.

What moves the price

Among Etna tours of this kind priced per person, comparing tours alike in everything else (a regression on October 2026 prices).

  • +10% a small group likely between +1% and +20%, 74 tours with it
  • -19% the 4x4 left out of the price and paid on the day likely between -29% and -8%, 33 tours with it

A lower listed price here means more to pay on the mountain, not a cheaper day.

From the city to 1,900 m in an hour

The morning starts early. Etna Touring's summit excursion collects between 7:20 and 7:40, reaches the mountain by 9:00 and starts walking at 9:30; the half-day tours that stay lower leave later, and the sunset tours collect in the afternoon. Most vans take the road north out of the city through Nicolosi, the last town on the south slope, and climb past the lava flows of past eruptions to Rifugio Sapienza at about 1,900 m. The listings put the drive at about an hour.

Pickup is not always at the hotel door. Fewer than half of the 214 tours collect from your accommodation; others use a few fixed points in the centre. Etna Touring picks up at four places, including Piazza dei Quattro Canti, and Etnaround's trek meets in the old centre and stops for coffee and sandwiches in Trecastagni on the way. Hotels inside Catania’s restricted traffic zone get a meeting point nearby instead, as one private listing spells out.

At Rifugio Sapienza the day splits by what you bought. The summit treks take the Funivia dell’Etna cable car to 2,500 m and, on the 3,400 m options, a 4x4 to about 2,800 m, then walk. Sicilying's summit hike lists the fares to pay on site: €54 for the cable car on the 3,000 m option, €82 with the 4x4 on the summit option. The easy half days stay around the base: Etna Est's morning or sunset tour walks the extinct craters, goes into a lava cave with helmet and torch, and tops out at 2,100 m. When the volcano’s alert phase closes the summit zone, the treks drop to the highest level allowed; Ashàra's trek says it then continues with the cable car only.

Without a tour

AST runs one bus a day from Piazza Giovanni XXIII, in front of Catania Centrale station, at 8:15. It takes about two hours, passing through Nicolosi, and comes back from Rifugio Sapienza at 16:30; the return ticket is €6.60, sold on board, and buying early does not reserve a seat (AST, October 2026). It runs every day except 25 December, 1 January, 1 May, 15 August and Easter Sunday. Arriving at about 10:15 leaves time for the Funivia’s €82 Tour 3000, whose ticket is valid until 15:15. Miss the 16:30 and the only way down is a taxi.

Two bus tours sit between the AST bus and a guided day. Tourist Service's panoramic bus leaves Via Vittorio Emanuele near the Duomo at 11:30 with an audio guide, gives three and a half hours at the refuge and is back around 17:30. Katane Live's open-top bus also leaves at 11:30, adds a honey stop in Zafferana Etnea and is back around 18:00.

Cruise passengers dock about 800 m from the centre, by the port operator’s figure, so the centre’s meeting points are a short walk. A few tours collect at the cruise terminal itself, such as Madre Natura's jeep and wine tour. Leave a margin: summit treks run five to nine hours from Catania, and the guides change plans for wind and volcanic activity, not for a ship’s timetable.
