The long way up, and the north side most visitors miss

A Taormina tour starts with a pickup loop. Coaches and vans work down the hill and along the coast, collecting from hotels, the Interbus terminal on Via Pirandello, Giardini Naxos and Letojanni: CityBySee's north-side bus posts its stops, from Letojanni at 7:55 to the last Giardini Naxos hotel at 9:00. Kemedia's Etna and Alcantara tour lists 30 pickup points. Then the road decides the day.

South or north

The south side, Rifugio Sapienza at about 1,900 m, is where the cable car, the Silvestri craters and most of Etna’s tours are. From Taormina the listings put it at 75 to 90 minutes each way by car or van. A south-side half day such as Kemedia's hike and cave tour walks an easy trail among extinct craters, goes into a lava cave with helmet and head torch, and stops for honey and olive oil, with three hours of the seven spent driving. Going higher is extra: the cable car and 4x4 bus are paid at the station.

The north side is closer. The road climbs from the coast through Linguaglossa and the pine woods to Piano Provenzana, about 1,800 m, where the 2002 eruption destroyed the old resort buildings. Sicily Active's hike and gorge day reaches its first stop in about 45 minutes, then walks 4 to 5 km on forest paths and lava fields to a line of side craters. There is no cable car on the north side. Above Piano Provenzana it is 4x4 vehicles with alpine guides: the north-side 4x4 tour drives to the observatory at about 2,800 m and walks for half an hour, and trainers are enough. The cheaper north-side buses, such as Etna Nord Basic, give free time at 1,810 m and charge the ascent separately.

Most listings sell the far side of the mountain with something else, and that is where the price goes. About one tour in five adds the Alcantara Gorges, a lava canyon cut by the Alcantara river: Sicily Active includes the entrance ticket and an hour there, and suggests swimwear if you want to go in. More than a quarter are wine days, with an Etna walk in the morning and lunch at a winery. Full days run seven to nine hours, so the median Taormina tour costs €120, against €80 for a tour from Catania.

The summit treks are the exception. Only a handful of tours from Taormina go to the summit area, and they meet the same rule as everywhere: the area around the active craters is open only with licensed alpine or volcanological guides, and closes to everyone when the alert phase rises (Belpasso ordinance 135 of 10 August 2026). Etna Blaze's 3,000 m trek picks up in Taormina and leaves the €54 cable car to you; the bigger choice of summit days starts in Catania or at the mountain stations. Without a tour, the one public bus up the south side is AST’s, and it leaves from Catania at 8:15.
